Aida by Guiseppe Verdi

Sevenoaks Opera @ Stag Theatre, Sevenoaks, March 2001

Director: Stuart Barker  Conductor: Trevor Edwards  Lighting Designer: Tony Moore

The ghosts of the past awake from their wall paintings to replay their tragic stories amongst the ruins of Ancient Egypt. Six trucks with various combinations of ruined stonework move around to create all the required locations. The yellow sand of Egypt encroaches across the stage to engulf the black earth of Nubia. The costumes delineate status by colour; green for priests and priestesses; blue for soldiers; earth tones for citizens; and red and gold for royalty. The Ethiopians are monochrome, Aida in white and Amonasro in grey. (All scenic painting and costume construction by Stuart Targett)
